We construct a patent collaboration database including city, grid and grid-pair level information to study how the spread of coffee shops increases local inventive activity. Using rapid expansion of the Starbucks from 1999 to 2019, we analyze its impact on innovation and collaborative matches in invention. We find that 10% faster growth in the number of new Starbucks stores in a city increases patent filings in that city by about 3-8%. Collaborative patent also increases in cities that see a faster growth in coffee establishments. We capture local effect when using a difference in differences method with spacial specification. The impact of Starbucks expansion on local innovation activities attenuates sharply within 1-2 kilometers of the Starbucks shops.
